More than 200,000 people flee or lock down as wildfires sweep France and Spain

More than two hundred thousand people have fled or been ordered to shelter in place as fierce wildfires swept across Spain and France on Friday, The Guardian reports. Authorities in south-west France ordered the total evacuation, by land and sea, of the Cap Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast — one of the country's best-known holiday spots — in the face of a blaze officials described as intense and highly unpredictable. The fire has burned through more than nineteen thousand hectares of forest. Spain, meanwhile, has declared a national emergency as the flames pressed across both nations.
