Trump condemns violence, slams press at White House Correspondents' Dinner

politics

President Trump used his speech at Friday's rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner to condemn the political violence that had postponed the event, then in the next breath turned on the assembled press, Axios reports. It was the first time Trump has attended the dinner as president, and he opened with jokes before sliding into familiar grievances — singling out CNN reporters by name and warning guests not to believe any 'fake news.' The gathering had originally been called off in April after a gunman opened fire outside the ballroom, wounding a Secret Service agent, but Trump insisted it be put back on the calendar. He closed the roughly hour-long speech by donning a 'Trump 2028' hat and pledging to run for another term, to light applause.
