Google is finally opening the Play Store to outside payments

tech

Google is beginning to implement changes to Play Store billing, according to The Verge, as part of its settlement with Epic Games over antitrust claims. Though the court hasn't officially signed off yet, Google is rolling out the ability for developers to use alternative payment methods worldwide. The thirty percent fee that Google charged on app transactions had become a central point of contention. This move reflects broader regulatory scrutiny of app store practices, similar to changes forced on Apple. Developers now gain the option to process payments through systems outside Google's control—a significant shift from the company's prior monopoly over Android app distribution.
