Building A Fencing Scoring Box

According to Hackaday, when a fencing club's scoring system failed, maker jc0025 built a replacement using hobbyist electronics. The core is an Arduino microcontroller wired to LED display panels and connected to each player's equipment. The system detects hits electronically: a colored flash when a weapon strikes the opponent's jacket, white for an off-target touch to the floor, plus a buzzer for audio feedback. Everything's housed in a three-D printed case and powered via USB. It's an affordable workaround to expensive commercial scoring gear, and a neat example of makers solving practical problems for their communities.
