Governments have a financial vested interest not to reform gambling laws. Here’s why

politics

Australia's gambling reform has stalled despite strong public support for tougher regulations. The Conversation reports that behind the political reluctance lies a structural conflict: state governments depend on gambling taxes to fund schools, hospitals, and social services because of fiscal imbalances in Australia's federal system. New South Wales collects three point six billion dollars annually from gambling—money forecast to reach four point seven billion over the next four years. The state hosts roughly half the nation's ninety thousand poker machines. Queensland and Victoria also rely heavily on gambling revenue. Fixing this would require the federal government to fundamentally restructure how it funds the states, a change that appears unlikely given the nation's current fiscal pressures.
