‘Climate hushing’ has swept the Democratic Party. New polling suggests it’s a mistake.

Since losing the 2024 election, Democrats have scaled back climate messaging—the so-called 'climate hush'—to focus on cost-of-living concerns. But a new UC Santa Barbara survey suggests this might backfire. Grist reports that the poll of roughly thirty-five hundred voters found that emphasizing climate change could actually boost support for Democratic candidates. Two-thirds of respondents, including roughly sixty percent of Republicans, backed renewable energy investments regardless of framing. When voters chose between candidates with randomly assigned priorities, those emphasizing climate received a boost of four-point-five percentage points. The finding has reignited a strategic debate: some Democrats argue quiet policy work on energy affordability is smarter, while others, including Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, warn that silence erodes political will for climate action when Democrats regain power.
