Per Science News, researchers studied the evolution of a distinctive hearing adaptation in pinnipeds—seals, sea lions, and walruses—that lets them hear well both on land and underwater. They scanned the ears of hundreds of marine mammals to investigate when this dual-hearing ability first developed.
