These insect submariners survive depths that should crush them

ScienceDaily reports that fly larvae in Lake Malawi dive more than two hundred meters each day to escape predators. These insects control their depth using tiny air sacs lined with resilin—a rubber-like material—which they can expand or shrink by altering the pH around the sacs. Their ability to survive at such extreme pressure challenges long-held assumptions about why insects are largely absent from Earth's open oceans.
