Small talk acts like social glue – here’s how to get better at it

science

Small talk might seem superficial, but it's actually fundamental social infrastructure. Per The Conversation, anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski called it 'phatic communion'—a way to open, maintain, and signal relationships through connection. Concerns have emerged that people, especially young people, lost conversational skills during the pandemic amid rising screen time. But small talk isn't declining; it's reshaping itself to fit our changing lives. Artificial intelligence is even mastering small talk now, and since it excels at convention, it arguably does it better than most people. The real value: small talk is how strangers become friends and communities are built. To improve, try sharing a genuine observation from your own life or offering specific compliments—touches that make the ritual more meaningful without demanding intimacy.
