What vegan and vegetarian diets can and can’t tell us about eating disorders

health

A new systematic review of about twenty-five thousand people found that vegetarian and vegan diets aren't inherently linked to eating disorders—but the reason someone adopts vegetarianism matters a lot. Per The Conversation, researchers analyzed two dozen studies comparing eating disorder symptoms across dietary groups and found no meaningful overall difference. However, when people take up vegetarianism specifically out of fear about weight gain, they're more likely to report disordered eating symptoms. The key isn't the diet itself, but what motivated the change and how someone's relationship with food evolves—sudden restriction, mounting food rules, and distress are worth watching for, while a longstanding diet rooted in personal values presents a different picture.
