Vaccine hesitancy isn't a modern invention. Ars Technica reports that skepticism of vaccines stretches back to 19th-century England, where people rioted against a mandatory smallpox vaccine, claiming it violated civil rights and bodily integrity. Across the Atlantic, the Anti-Compulsory Vaccination League was established in Brooklyn in 1894—more than a century ago. Today, vaccine hesitancy is most publicly associated with the Make America Healthy Again movement and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
