'Self-hosting' is a term describing taking control of your own data by running applications on hardware you manage, rather than relying on big tech companies. According to The Conversation, this is emerging as a way to escape corporate data harvesting and expensive subscription services. The idea isn't new—blogging platforms and email clients predated Gmail and major social networks—but it's become far more accessible with cheap single-board computers like the Raspberry Pi and dedicated self-hosting systems. The appeal is straightforward: you know exactly where your data lives and who can access it. But there's a real cost. Running your own systems requires technical knowledge, means you're responsible for backups and security, and if you want access from outside your home, you need expertise to keep hackers out. For some, that tradeoff is worth it; for most casual users, it's a lot of effort to avoid convenience.
