Launch HN: Rise Reforming (YC S26) – Turning Waste Gases into Valuable Chemicals

Rise Reforming is converting biogas—a waste product from landfills and wastewater plants—into higher-value industrial chemicals, according to a launch post on Hacker News. The Y Combinator startup's modular process cleans the biogas, reforms it into syngas, and upgrades it to dimethyl ether or methanol. Hacker News reports that the U.S. produces roughly seven hundred eighty billion cubic feet of biogas annually, though sixty percent is currently just burned or flared rather than put to use. If converted to methanol, that wasted biogas could be worth approximately twenty billion dollars a year. The company has completed its proof-of-concept and just broke ground on a pilot plant at a Chicagoland wastewater facility, with operations expected to begin in the first quarter of twenty twenty-seven. The project targets two critical problems: the chemical industry's dependence on fossil fuels—which drives five to six percent of global greenhouse gas emissions—and the vulnerability of centralized chemical supply chains to geopolitical and climate shocks.
