Gaming helps mums recover from parenting stress – but guilt can still get in the way

health

A new Australian study of gaming mothers offers surprising findings about stress recovery through play. Researchers surveyed 38 mothers who game independently and found that seventy-one percent reported feeling less stressed after gameplay, with most achieving psychological detachment through solo play. The Conversation is reporting that the discovery challenges stereotypes—mothers aren't drawn to domestic-themed or "soft" games, but rather complex narratives and challenging experiences like Fallout 4 and Assassin's Creed. Yet guilt remains a significant barrier: many mothers struggle to justify gaming time against competing demands of child-rearing, housework, and paid work, even as research demonstrates its powerful role in wellbeing. Game developers could help by designing titles that accommodate parental interruption and control, making stress relief more accessible to gaming mums.
