A dog saved Houssein Hamze from a bomb. When war returned, he stayed to care for Lebanon’s animals

Houssein Hamze runs Mashala, a Lebanese animal shelter. During Israel's 2006 war with Hezbollah, The Guardian reports, a rescue dog saved his life. The dog's barking woke him one night, and moments later, a bomb struck his home, with shrapnel landing exactly where he'd been sleeping. In peacetime, the shelter takes in strays. When war returned, Hamze stayed to care for the animals, serving as their only lifeline in the region.
