Batteries are getting cheaper while gas gets pricier. Here’s why

Australia's electricity grid is quietly undergoing a major transformation. Batteries are now replacing gas-fired power stations during peak demand, according to The Conversation, and they're doing it at a fraction of the cost. Wholesale electricity prices have plummeted forty-seven percent compared to last year, fueled by record renewable and battery generation. The cost of grid-scale batteries fell between eleven and sixteen percent just last year, with costs expected to keep dropping. Gas, meanwhile, is becoming increasingly expensive and impractical: manufacturers now take four years to build a single gas turbine, and Australia's newest gas plant can only run for about ten hours before needing more than a day to refuel. As Australia aims for eighty-two percent renewable energy by twenty thirty, batteries are already proving it's not just cleaner—it's cheaper too.
