The Federal Register reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is extending the public comment period for new brake safety standards designed for autonomous vehicles. The standards, known as FMVSS Number 135, were written assuming all vehicles have manual brake controls, but the agency is updating the rules to account for vehicles without manual controls. Originally set to end July 27th, the comment period will now extend thirty additional days, to August 26th, giving the auto industry and safety advocates more time to weigh in on how self-driving car braking systems should be regulated.
