Analysis: 84% of nations miss deadline to identify ‘nature-harming’ subsidies by 2025

Most countries failed to meet a 2025 deadline to identify government subsidies harming biodiversity, per Carbon Brief analysis. Only 21 of 134 nations that submitted reports say they've completed the process. The 32 countries that have identified at least some of these subsidies—which span fossil fuels, agriculture, fishing, and other sectors—report spending an estimated two hundred seventy billion dollars annually on nature-damaging incentives. But that's just the tip of the iceberg: experts estimate the global figure could reach one point eight trillion dollars. The Kunming-Montreal agreement asked countries to reform at least five hundred billion dollars of these subsidies by 2030, and the issue is expected to be a key priority at October's COP17 nature summit in Armenia.
