California colleges are rethinking how they teach about César Chávez after a New York Times investigation detailed sexual abuse allegations against the farm labor leader, according to CalMatters. Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Workers, told the Times that Chávez raped her twice, part of what the investigation described as a broader pattern of abuse toward women and girls within the union. Universities including Fresno State, Cal State San Marcos, UC Berkeley and UCLA moved quickly to remove statues and strip his name from buildings and programs, while state lawmakers renamed the Cesar Chavez holiday to Farmworkers Day. Now, per CalMatters, historians and professors are working to broaden the farmworker movement's history beyond a single leader, including Filipino American organizers Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz, who helped launch the 1965 Delano grape strike alongside Chávez's union.
