Despite concerns about AI Overviews, some nonprofit news outlets see a surge in search traffic
tech
Nieman Lab reports that several nonprofit news outlets saw significant traffic gains during the May and June primary season, driven by detailed voter guides and comprehensive election coverage. The Fifty-First, a Washington-based news cooperative, experienced a fifty percent increase in monthly visits, from one hundred twenty thousand to one hundred seventy-nine thousand, with its voter guide alone capturing fifty thousand pageviews. CalMatters in California roughly doubled its traffic to three point eight million in May; The Colorado Sun reached one point nine million visits in June, with its secretary of state candidates guide drawing fifty one thousand pageviews. Much of the traffic came from organic search, supporting the outlets' finding that voters continue to seek detailed, comprehensive information that goes beyond search summaries.
