‘Race against time’: Japan earthquake death toll rises as rescue teams search for missing

A six point eight magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan's Kyushu island on Tuesday, and the Guardian reports the death toll has climbed to at least thirteen, with hundreds more injured. The quake, which registered a maximum of seven on Japan's shindo intensity scale, knocked out power and water to tens of thousands of homes. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called it a race against time on Wednesday, saying the government will go all out to find and rescue survivors. The military has mobilized thousands of personnel to join rescue teams still searching through the wreckage.
