Rethinking the "Second Brain": From Storing Information to Structuring Reasoning

According to LessWrong, a developer named Sergei Simonovi is rethinking how we use note-taking tools to organize our thinking. Most "second brain" applications like Obsidian and Roam excel at storing information, but they struggle to help us reason through it — when you link two notes together, the meaning of that connection lives only in your head. Simonovi proposes adding explicit types to notes, like problem, hypothesis, or conclusion, and explicit relationships between them, like supports or contradicts. The goal is to make your reasoning inspectable: you can see which conclusions rest on unverified hypotheses and which questions are blocking important decisions. He built a prototype called Arguma to test the approach, which also allows users to share chains of logically connected thoughts. The author acknowledges this is still experimental and questions whether the added structure helps or simply adds friction to note-taking.
