Conflicts can spread infectious diseases while making outbreaks harder to detect

The Conversation reports on research showing that conflict-affected regions struggle to detect disease outbreaks even as wars create conditions for them to spread faster. The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda killed at least fifty-five people before it was formally recognized as a public health emergency in May twenty twenty-six. Researchers who analyzed decades of disease surveillance data found that wars damage the clinics, laboratories, and reporting systems needed to spot infections early—while simultaneously forcing communities to flee, disrupting vaccination programs, and making it impossible for health workers to reach affected populations. Diseases like polio and cholera became more common during civil wars as vaccination rates collapsed and sanitation systems failed. Influenza paradoxically appeared less often in outbreak reports during conflict, not because fighting prevented its spread, but because the testing and reporting infrastructure to detect it had broken down. The pattern was especially pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa. The Yemen war produced one of the largest recorded cholera epidemics in recent history. This collision between conflict and disease surveillance means the world may be least able to spot dangerous outbreaks in precisely the places where they pose the greatest threat.
