A California health worker union is accusing Kaiser Permanente of using algorithms to triage mental health patients instead of doctors. Per CalMatters, the union filed a state complaint, alleging Kaiser's virtual consultation tool automatically generates care recommendations from patient questionnaires without review by licensed clinicians. Kaiser says the tool supports but doesn't replace clinical judgment; the union counters that instant recommendations preclude any human review. Therapists testified at a San Francisco hearing that algorithms miss what trained clinicians detect—especially signs of serious depression that patients often downplay. Kaiser didn't attend. In 2023, Kaiser paid fifty million dollars in fines and committed to investing one hundred fifty million dollars after state regulators found serious mental health care delays.
