Dr. Muthusamy Anandkumar, appointed after a lawsuit from seven detainees, identified thirteen deficiencies in health care run by private prison company CoreCivic, including emergency care, dental care, and chronic disease management, and wrote that understaffing and inadequate training — not individual health workers — were to blame. His findings echo a September inspection by Disability Rights California, which found the same failures to distribute medication for conditions like diabetes and seizures ten months earlier, CalMatters reports. CoreCivic says it provides daily physical and mental health access and around-the-clock emergency services, while coordinating outside specialist care it says is beyond its direct control.
