Schools are rethinking whether every student needs a laptop

When the pandemic forced classrooms online, schools scrambled to put a device in every student's hands. Now they're reconsidering. The Conversation reports that at least seventeen states have recently introduced or debated legislation addressing classroom screen time, and six have already enacted new laws. Los Angeles eliminated classroom screen use for preschool through first grade and is phasing out the one device per student model. Utah passed similar restrictions for kindergarten through third grade. The reversal reflects growing research: students learn best when actively using technology to solve problems and investigate questions, not passively consuming digital content. The emerging emphasis is on treating screens as a tool for purposeful learning, not as a classroom default.
