What happened when CA lawmaker tried to put mom in conservatorship

A CalMatters investigation found that Assemblymember Anamarie Ávila Farías, who now sits on her chamber's eldercare committee, once sought a conservatorship over her own mother, AnaMaria Ávila Bugarin, after a real estate dispute turned physical. Court records from Contra Costa County show two doctors and a neuropsychologist found no evidence of dementia, and Ávila Farías dropped the conservatorship bid only after her mother agreed to sign over property in a settlement. An elder-law professor called the move "a weaponization of the process," though a spokesperson for Ávila Farías says there's been no judicial finding of wrongdoing. As CalMatters reports, the records also revealed inconsistencies in how the assemblymember described the same property to courts versus a state ethics commission.
