Burnham’s tax power shift aims to free England’s mayors from ‘Treasury death grip’

England's regional mayors are poised to gain significant new financial powers. Starting in April, they'll collect business rates revenue totaling tens of millions of pounds. From twenty twenty-eight, they'll also keep a share of the income tax generated in their regions. According to the Guardian, local leaders say this plan will break their dependence on central government handouts and give them the ability to borrow and invest in major projects.
