Researchers at Rome's University Tor Vergata have discovered something counterintuitive about phase change materials—substances that store and release heat like a battery, used for thermal management in electronics, solar panels, and hydrogen storage. Their study, reported in Physics World and published in EPL, shows that fins packed too close together actually interfere with each other, each one trying to melt material that a nearby fin has already heated. But the gaps between fins? They're actually helpful: the melted material there acts as an extra heat source, driving stronger convection currents that improve overall efficiency. The findings could improve thermal management system design by optimizing fin placement rather than simply adding more fins.
