Here’s what supercharged the monster wildfires in Spain and France

Wildfires tore across France and Spain this past week, forcing hundreds of thousands from their homes in one of the largest evacuations Europe has seen since World War Two. According to Grist, a new study from World Weather Attribution found human-driven climate change made fire-prone conditions at least twice as likely in France and at least twenty times as likely in central Spain. The disaster followed a punishing stretch of heat waves and drought that turned vegetation into tinder, and roughly four hundred thirty thousand hectares have burned so far this year, already ahead of last year's record pace. Firefighters have since made progress containing many of the blazes, but forecasters warn another round of heat could arrive by mid-August.
