Deaths reported as an estimated 49,000 people cross into Spain’s African enclave of Ceuta – Europe live

The Guardian reports deaths amid an estimated forty-nine thousand people crossing into Ceuta, Spain's enclave on the North African coast, as Italy pushes to have Spain suspended from the Schengen free-travel area over the surge. France's interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, says he's ordered tighter checks at the Spanish border and activated a rapid intervention border force in response, and said France will limit Schengen free movement to EU nationals starting in 2027. Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, is expected to visit the territory today, according to the Guardian's live coverage.
