Publishers are losing Google traffic as AI answers replace links
tech
According to Axios, Google Search traffic to publishers has collapsed thirty-four percent over the past year, as the search giant increasingly answers questions directly in its AI-powered results rather than directing users to external websites. The hit is regressive: small publishers lost sixty percent of search referrals over two years; medium-sized ones forty-seven percent; large publishers twenty-two percent. This matters because search traffic brings high-intent users—people looking for specific answers—who are far more valuable than casual visitors from social media. The shift extends beyond Google. Platforms like LinkedIn and Reddit are flooded with AI-generated content, making authentic voices harder to find. Substack recently partnered with AI-detection software firm Pangram, warning that "platforms that reward fakeness will create a race to the bottom." Publishers are now racing to optimize their content for large language models—a strategy some call "GEO," the LLM-era counterpart to traditional SEO. As AI agents become the middlemen between readers and websites, the future won't look like browsing; it'll look more like talking to an intermediary.
