From pit stop to plant food: how Grand Prix crowd’s urine becomes fertilizer

A startup called NPK Recovery has developed a mobile system to turn urine into fertilizer—on site, as it happens, according to Physics World. The technology avoids the extreme heat and pressure of the industrial Haber-Bosch process, which converts natural gas into ammonia and demands enormous energy. The team recently demonstrated the system at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, where attendees became unwitting contributors to sustainable agriculture. With the UK importing all of its nitrogen and global supply chains exposed by recent conflicts, on-site alternatives like this could help secure fertilizer for off-grid locations facing sudden surges in human waste—though they're not positioned as a replacement for industrial-scale production.
