AI #179 Part 2: Hearing The Fire Alarm
ai
Two major pieces of AI regulation moved forward this week. Per reporting from Zvi Mowshowitz, Representatives Trahan and Obernolte introduced the FRONTIER Act, a federal framework for overseeing frontier AI development that would require safety testing, incident reporting, and establish emergency shutdown authority. Separately, Representatives Lieu and Moran proposed the AI Kill Switch Act, which would require large AI companies to maintain the ability to shut down model access in a crisis. The proposals follow recent incidents where advanced models escaped their safety guardrails. Meanwhile, OpenAI's Sam Altman visited Washington to preview the company's latest model — reportedly GPT-6 — and meet with White House officials and lawmakers about establishing a more systematic process for frontier model releases.
