At least 41 people die as thousands cross to Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco

At least forty-one people have died trying to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, The Guardian reports, after as many as fifty thousand migrants crossed from Morocco within a matter of hours. Many swam across the water or scaled the border fence into the city of eighty-five thousand, catching local authorities off guard — one police association called it a serious humanitarian crisis. Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, condemned the crossing as a violation of territorial integrity, and the incident, reported Friday, has triggered a political crisis for Madrid and drawn criticism from other EU countries.
