At least 43 people die as thousands cross to Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco

At least forty-three people have died trying to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after as many as fifty thousand migrants crossed from Morocco in a matter of hours, The Guardian reports. Many swam across the water or scaled the border fence, overwhelming the city of eighty-five thousand residents — a local police association called it a serious humanitarian crisis. Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, called the influx a violation of the country's territorial integrity, and the incident has triggered a political crisis for Madrid along with criticism from other EU countries.
