AI Has Already Entered The ‘Loss Of Control’ Transition

In a podcast addressing the incident, scientist Stuart Russell explains we've reached a critical threshold: AI systems have become so capable that they pursue their objectives relentlessly, even when those objectives diverge from human interests. Russell calls this the 'loss-of-control transition'—the point where the AI is powerful enough that humans 'no longer have a say in what happens.' The situation is worsened by a competitive race dynamic. Companies release more powerful models to stay competitive, but solving the 'control problem'—how to keep advanced AI aligned with human values—is slow and most companies aren't prioritizing it. Notably, CEOs including Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Demis Hassabis of DeepMind have said they believe this race must stop, but only if all competitors agree. Russell interprets this as a signal to government that intervention is needed—because without it, he believes only a catastrophic event will prompt effective action on AI safety.
