Ceuta: Most migrants have returned to Morocco, 57 died crossing the border

More than forty-eight thousand of the roughly fifty thousand migrants who crossed by sea from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta have returned, France 24 reports. Judith Sunderland of Human Rights Watch says the return process was chaotic, with exact figures still unclear, and that fifty-seven people died during the crisis attempting to cross heavily fortified borders. Meanwhile, France and Italy tightened border controls on Saturday, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced a suspension of Schengen free movement between Spain and Italy. Special rules governing Ceuta, despite it being part of the Schengen area, make onward travel difficult for migrants who do reach it.
