Sánchez condemns ‘selfish’ reaction of some EU countries to Ceuta border crisis as death toll rises – Europe live

Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has accused some EU countries of a "selfish, polarising and illegal" response to the mass crossing of tens of thousands of people from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. In a letter to Brussels, he said several member states have pushed to have Spain temporarily excluded from the Schengen area, a move he attributed to prejudice, misinformation, or political motives rather than EU law. The Guardian reports Sánchez also thanked Morocco for its assistance during the crisis, as the death toll from the crossings continues to rise.
