Ceuta: Most migrants have returned to Morocco, 57 died crossing the border

Spanish officials say more than forty-eight thousand of the roughly fifty thousand migrants who crossed by sea from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta have now returned, France 24 reports. Human Rights Watch's Judith Sunderland says the return process was chaotic, with the exact figures still unclear, and that fifty-seven people died attempting the heavily fortified crossing. France and Italy tightened border controls on Saturday, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni suspending Schengen free movement between Spain and Italy. Even for those who did reach Ceuta, special rules governing the enclave make onward travel within Spain difficult.
