Per ScienceDaily, new research is challenging a forty-two-year-old understanding of childhood obesity. Scientists have long believed that around age six, children's BMI rises—an 'adiposity rebound' thought to signal early weight gain. But new research shows that while BMI does increase, body fat doesn't rebound at all. Instead, the increase comes from growing muscle and lean tissue as children develop. Researchers say this normal process has been mistaken for an obesity warning sign for decades.
