Australia news live: aged-care nurses get pay rise; fuel excise cut due to end at midnight

Australia's aged-care nurses got a pay boost effective August first, a move The Guardian reports the government believes will help attract and retain staff and improve care quality for older Australians. At midnight, the fuel excise relief ends, pushing petrol above two dollars a litre and diesel above two dollars and forty cents.
