UN Secretary-General António Guterres traveled to Cyprus this week to propose fresh peace talks, RFI English reports, aimed at resolving one of the world's longest-standing frozen conflicts. The island's division was sealed by Turkey's invasion in nineteen seventy-four, but its roots reach back to nineteen sixty, when Cyprus gained independence under a flawed power-sharing constitution. The conflict has outlasted eleven UN secretaries-general before Guterres.
