Western Europe’s wildfire crisis retreats as Greece evacuates hundreds near Athens

Europe's wildfire crisis is splitting into very different stories depending where you look. In Greece, gale-force winds pushed flames deeper into western Attica, near Athens, threatening villages and an industrial area outside Megara, with the Guardian reporting those same winds were too strong for firefighting aircraft to scoop water from the sea. France, meanwhile, was still guarding a burn scar four times the size of Paris against renewed spread, while Spain's major fires had finally stopped advancing.
