A record number of First Nations people died in NSW prison custody last year. Advocates fear this year will be worse

Per the Guardian, Indigenous advocates in New South Wales warn that prisons there could exceed last year's record for Indigenous deaths in custody. Matthew Roberts, a twenty-seven-year-old Bundjalung, Yaegl and Gamilaroi man, died by suicide in Lithgow Correctional Centre on July seventh, three months after being remanded in March. He was a father of two young boys. Another First Nations man, twenty-one years old, died at Clarence Correctional Centre a week later. Advocates fear the pattern will worsen.
