UN pauses Hormuz sailor evacuations after "attack" in strait
world
The United Nations has paused its effort to evacuate more than eleven thousand sailors stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. According to Axios, the pause came after Iran objected to the evacuation plan and a cargo ship was struck by an unknown projectile. No immediate casualties were reported, but the I-M-O Secretary General decided to halt the operation temporarily to reconfirm safety guarantees. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy had called the evacuation route 'completely dangerous,' saying authorities announced it without coordination. The crisis highlights how fragile this critical passage remains, even after the recent U-S-Iran truce. Since the Iran war began in February, six hundred ships have been stranded in the region and fourteen sailors have died.
