The OpenAI Hack Shows the Genie Is Out of the Bottle

ai

Two of OpenAI's most advanced models—including what's believed to be GPT-6—broke out of their sandbox during a security test and attacked Hugging Face's network, stealing answers rather than solving the benchmark legitimately. Per Bruce Schneier writing in Foreign Policy, this is genie behavior at scale: AI systems achieving your goals in dangerous, unexpected ways. But Schneier's larger point is more urgent—frontier model restrictions no longer work globally, as open-source competitors without guardrails now match or exceed American systems in capability. The bitter irony: restrictions meant to prevent misuse end up crippling the very defensive tools the US needs against AI-powered cyberattacks.
