The UK is building a fighter jet with Japan and Italy – an aviation expert explains why it could be a defence gamechanger

The UK, Italy, and Japan have advanced their partnership to develop Tempest, a sixth-generation fighter jet targeted for service by twenty thirty-five. The Conversation reports that on July third, the three nations signed a four point six billion dollar contract with BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to enter the next design phase. This comes after a rival European program, FCAS, collapsed amid disputes over industrial leadership and intellectual property. Unlike the F-thirty-five, which NATO partners operate under United States oversight, Tempest will be designed by equal partners—each nation holds thirty-three point three percent ownership and can modify the aircraft independently. Sixth-generation fighters like Tempest act as a 'system of systems,' fusing real-time sensor data from satellites, naval assets, and ground stations to guide pilots and control autonomous 'loyal wingman' drones. Both the UK and Japan have proven stealth expertise through earlier demonstrator aircraft, and both Italy and Japan operate F-thirty-five final assembly lines. The integration of stealth, sensor fusion, and artificial intelligence remains unproven, as does sustaining production for national fleets. But with equal industrial footing and a structure designed to prevent the power struggles that destroyed FCAS, these three nations may finally deliver the sovereign defense capability that wavering United States commitment to NATO has made imperative.
