EFF, TEDIC and CEJIL Challenge Secrecy in the Use of Face Recognition in Paraguay

tech

Human rights organizations EFF, TEDIC, and CEJIL filed a complaint with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights against Paraguay's government. The issue: a facial recognition system the Ministry of Interior installed in Asunción in two thousand nineteen. When activists requested details about the system's protocols and data practices, the government refused—claiming "security" concerns. The organizations argue this violates the right to information, privacy, and informational self-determination. They're asking the Commission to order the government to disclose how the surveillance system works and to require mandatory human rights assessments before deploying such technology. According to the EFF, this case could set a crucial precedent for privacy rights across Latin America.
