What if people value their work mattering?

LessWrong contributor Tim H, an economist, examines an uncomfortable question: what if artificial intelligence makes human work meaningless, and no amount of money fixes that? He built a mathematical model starting from a deceptively simple premise—that people genuinely care whether their work matters. His findings are troubling. If the satisfaction from meaningful work and the satisfaction from material consumption are fundamentally different—if one can't replace the other—then growing wealth can't make up for losing meaningful labor. As automation expands, his model suggests overall well-being continues declining, even as total production grows. He emphasizes this isn't just about displaced workers. In his model, the entire population loses out equally.
